RONDJE WAD WEST
TWO ISLANDS IN ONE DAY!
Engelsmanplaat is a sandbank located between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. In the middle of the sandbank, there is a bird watcher`s house and a beacon, and to the north lies a beautiful reef with pristine white sand. The reef acts as a breakwater for the waves of the North Sea, protecting Engelsmanplaat. The sandbank features small dunes, giving the landscape a picturesque relief.
For this mudflat hike, we gather in Lauwersoog and you will be taken by bus to the parking lot between Nes and Wierum. From here, you will walk across the dike onto the mudflats towards Engelsmanplaat. Initially, you`ll traverse through mud and water, then across sand along the Smeriggat channel on the east side of Engelsmanplaat, eventually reaching the reef. Here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog while searching for seashells along the North Sea beach. At the western tip of the reef, a boat awaits to take you to Schiermonnikoog. Upon arrival at the Oude Wal on the southwest tip of the island, you will disembark. From there, it is a five-kilometer walk to the village where you can catch the bus to the ferry terminal.
